You’ve spent weeks writing a song, hours recording it, and you’re genuinely proud of how it’s coming together. You send the tracks off to a mix engineer, or maybe you’re trying to mix it yourself,and something just doesn’t sound right. The vocals feel harsh, the guitars are muddy, the drums lack punch. What went wrong?

Nine times out of ten, the answer isn’t in the mix. It’s in the recording.

As a mixing and mastering engineer, I hear the same handful of recording issues over and over again. And here’s the frustrating part: most of them are completely avoidable. You don’t need better gear or a fancier studio. You just need to avoid a few common traps that home recordists fall into.

Here are the five biggest home recording mistakes I see, and exactly how to fix each one.

1. Recording Too Hot (And Clipping Without Realising It)

This is probably the most destructive mistake on this list, because once it happens, there’s no fixing it.

Digital clipping occurs when your signal exceeds 0 dBFS, the absolute ceiling of digital audio. Unlike analogue tape, which saturates gradually and can actually sound pleasant when pushed, digital clipping is harsh, brittle, and irreversible. Once those waveform peaks are chopped off, that information is gone forever. No plugin, no amount of processing, and no mix engineer can bring it back.

I regularly receive tracks where the waveforms are visibly squared off, completely slammed into the ceiling. The artist recorded with their input gain cranked up because they thought louder = better. It doesn’t. Louder just means less room to work with and a higher chance of ruining the take.

How to Fix It

  • Aim for peaks around -6 to -10 dBFS. This gives you plenty of headroom without sacrificing signal quality. Modern 24-bit converters have an enormous dynamic range, you do not need to push the levels.
  • Watch your meters while recording. If you see red, stop and turn the gain down. It’s that simple.
  • Leave the loudness for mastering. Your recording should capture a clean, dynamic performance. The volume comes later. If you’re curious about loudness standards, I wrote a full guide on how loud your master should be for streaming platforms.
  • Do a test recording first. Play through the loudest section of the song and check your levels before committing to a take.

A quiet, clean recording is infinitely more useful than a loud, clipped one. Your mix engineer can always turn things up. They can’t un-clip a waveform.

2. Ignoring Room Acoustics

This is the one I bang on about constantly, and for good reason, it’s the single biggest factor separating professional-sounding home recordings from amateur ones.

Your microphone doesn’t just hear your voice or your guitar. It hears everything: the sound bouncing off your walls, floor, ceiling, desk, and windows. In an untreated room, those reflections create a boxy, echoey character that embeds itself into the recording. And unlike reverb you’d add in a mix, room reflections can’t be removed after the fact.

I’ve had sessions where the vocal recording sounded like it was done in a bathroom, because it basically was. Hard walls, tiled floor, glass everywhere. The vocal itself was performed beautifully, but the room destroyed it.

How to Fix It

  • Record in the smallest, most furnished room available. Walk-in wardrobes and closets full of clothes are genuinely excellent vocal booths. The soft materials absorb reflections naturally.
  • Hang heavy blankets or doonas around your recording area. You’re trying to stop sound bouncing off hard surfaces and back into the microphone.
  • Stay close to the microphone. The closer you are (within reason, 15 to 20 cm for vocals), the more direct sound the mic captures relative to room reflections.
  • Consider basic acoustic treatment. Even a few rockwool or acoustic foam panels behind and to the sides of your mic position make a noticeable difference. You don’t need to spend thousands, even a DIY approach with towels and moving blankets helps.

3. Over-Processing Tracks Before Sending Them for Mixing

I understand the instinct. You’ve got a plugin collection, you’ve watched a few YouTube tutorials, and you want your demo to sound as polished as possible before sending it off. So you slap an EQ on the vocal, compress the drums, add a limiter on the mix bus, and maybe throw some reverb on everything for good measure.

Here’s the problem: every one of those processing decisions locks you in. When your mix engineer receives those tracks, they’re not hearing the raw performance, they’re hearing your processing baked into the audio. And if that processing introduced problems (overly bright EQ, squashed dynamics, phase issues from stacked plugins), those problems are now permanent.

This is one of the most common issues I deal with. Someone sends me vocals that have been compressed to within an inch of their life, with all the natural dynamics crushed out. Or guitars where a harsh 3kHz boost has been EQ’d in and exported as part of the stem. I can’t undo that. I can only try to work around it.

How to Fix It

  • Export your stems dry: no effects, no processing. Remove any EQ, compression, reverb, and delay before bouncing your files. Let your mix engineer make those decisions with the full picture of the song in front of them.
  • The exception: creative effects. If a guitar pedal tone, a specific vocal delay, or a synth effect is part of the intended sound, keep it. Better yet, send two versions, one with the effect and one without,so your engineer has options.
  • Don’t put a limiter on your mix bus. Ever. This is surprisingly common with home recordings and it absolutely kills the mix. Limiting crushes transients and headroom that your mix engineer needs to work with.
  • Reference mixes are more useful than processing. Instead of trying to EQ your vocals to sound like a reference, just send the reference track to your engineer and say “I’d love the vocals to have this kind of warmth.” That communicates what you want without damaging the source material.

4. Inconsistent Gain Staging Across Tracks

Gain staging is one of those topics that sounds more technical than it actually is. In simple terms, it means making sure each track in your session is recorded at a consistent, healthy level, not too loud, not too quiet, and roughly in the same ballpark as the other tracks.

What I often see instead: a kick drum recorded at -3 dBFS (almost clipping), a vocal hovering around -30 dBFS (buried in the noise floor), acoustic guitar somewhere in between, and a bass DI that was recorded so quietly you can hear the hiss of the preamp louder than the performance.

When your levels are all over the place, it creates real problems downstream. Quiet recordings bring up the noise floor when you try to boost them. Overly hot recordings leave no headroom for processing. And the wild variation between tracks makes it harder to get a balanced starting point in the mix.

How to Fix It

  • Set your input gain individually for each instrument. Before you record, play through the loudest section and adjust until your peaks sit around -10 to -6 dBFS. Don’t just leave the gain knob where it was for the last instrument.
  • Use clip gain or volume automation to even out performances after recording. If a vocal performance has wildly different levels between the verse and chorus, ride the clip gain so it’s more consistent before you export. Your mix engineer will do detailed automation, but giving them a reasonably even starting point saves time and gives a better result.
  • Check your noise floor. Record a few seconds of silence in your room with your mic and preamp at recording level. If you can hear obvious hiss, hum, or buzz, track down the source before committing to a full session. Common culprits: computer fans, air conditioning, dimmer switches, and dodgy cables.
  • Don’t normalise your tracks before exporting. Normalisation pushes the loudest peak to 0 dBFS, which can clip transients and removes the natural dynamic relationship between your tracks. Just export at the level you recorded.

5. Skipping Basic Editing and Cleanup

Here’s a hard truth that a lot of home recordists don’t want to hear: mixing cannot fix a bad performance.

I can make a good recording sound incredible. I can take a decent recording and make it shine. But I cannot take a vocal that’s consistently pitchy, a guitar that’s out of time, or a drum performance riddled with timing issues and turn it into a polished record through mixing alone. That’s not how it works.

Mixing is about balance, tone, space, and emotion. It’s not a rescue operation for sloppy recordings. And yet, I regularly receive sessions where no basic editing has been done at all, breaths are harsh and distracting, there are long gaps of room noise between vocal phrases, guitar strings are buzzing, and timing is loose enough that the groove falls apart.

How to Fix It

  • Tune your vocals. You don’t need to make them robotic, subtle pitch correction with something like Melodyne or even GarageBand’s built-in tuner can clean up the odd wobbly note without killing the character. If you’re not sure how, send the raw vocal and ask your mix engineer to handle tuning, most of us (myself included) offer this as part of the mixing process.
  • Tighten up your timing. If the guitar is rushing ahead of the beat in the chorus or the bass is dragging in the bridge, nudge those regions into place. A tight rhythm section is the foundation of a great mix.
  • Clean up noise between phrases. Strip silence or manually trim the gaps between vocal lines, guitar parts, and any track that has audible room noise or bleed when the performer isn’t playing. This is quick to do and makes a massive difference.
  • Edit out clicks, pops, and mouth sounds. A few minutes of cleanup on the front end saves significant time in the mix and leads to a cleaner final result.
  • Listen critically before exporting. Solo each track and listen all the way through. Is the performance tight? Are there obvious issues? Would you be happy releasing this if the mix sounded perfect? If not, consider re-recording the problematic sections.

The Common Thread: Garbage In, Garbage Out

Every mistake on this list comes back to one principle that I wish more artists understood: your mix can only ever be as good as your recordings.

A skilled mix engineer, working with clean, well-recorded, properly prepared tracks,can do extraordinary things. They can bring out emotion, create depth, build power, and make your song feel like a record. But they can’t manufacture quality that isn’t there in the source material.

The good news? Every single one of these mistakes is fixable at no extra cost. You don’t need new gear. You don’t need a professional studio. You just need to be a bit more intentional about how you record and prepare your tracks.
