You can buy the best microphone on the market, pair it with a top-shelf preamp, and record into a pristine 24-bit signal chain — and your recordings will still sound amateur if your room is working against you.
Room acoustics are the invisible ingredient in every recording. They’re the reason a vocal tracked in a bedroom sounds boxy and harsh, while the same vocal in a treated space sounds open, clear, and professional. And here’s the thing most people get wrong: fixing your room doesn’t require spending thousands of dollars. You just need to understand what actually makes a difference and what’s a waste of money.
I’ve mixed hundreds of tracks recorded in home studios, spare bedrooms, and garage setups. The ones that sound great almost always come from rooms where the artist spent a bit of time and a modest budget on acoustic treatment. The ones that sound rough? Usually zero treatment, or the wrong kind.
Here’s what actually works — and what doesn’t.
Why Your Room Matters More Than Your Gear
When sound leaves your speakers or your voice hits a microphone, it doesn’t just travel in a straight line. It bounces off every hard surface in the room — walls, ceiling, floor, desk, windows. Those reflections arrive at your ears (or the mic) milliseconds after the direct sound, creating comb filtering, flutter echoes, and a muddy build-up of low-mid frequencies.
This is why untreated bedrooms sound “boxy.” It’s not the mic’s fault. It’s the room adding its own character to everything you record and everything you hear through your monitors.
If you’re recording in an untreated space, your mic is capturing the room almost as much as it’s capturing your performance. And if you’re mixing in an untreated space, you’re making decisions based on a lie — your monitors are telling you one thing, but the actual mix sounds completely different in any other environment.

Absorption vs Diffusion — Know the Difference
There are two main approaches to acoustic treatment, and they do very different things:
Absorption reduces the energy of reflections. Absorptive materials (thick foam, rockwool panels, fibreglass batts, heavy fabric) soak up sound waves, particularly mid and high frequencies. This is what tames flutter echoes, reduces boxiness, and cleans up your recordings.
Diffusion scatters reflections rather than eliminating them. Diffusers break up sound waves so they arrive at your ears from many angles rather than as a concentrated reflection. This preserves a sense of “liveness” in the room without the harshness of untreated reflections.
For most home studios on a budget, absorption is where you should focus first. Diffusion is a nice-to-have, but it’s absorption that solves the biggest problems — especially for recording.
What Actually Works (Without Breaking the Bank)
1. DIY Rockwool or Fibreglass Panels — The Best Bang for Your Dollar
If you only do one thing from this entire article, make it this: build or buy panels made from dense mineral wool insulation (Rockwool, Bradford Insulation, or similar). These are the gold standard for broadband absorption and they’re surprisingly easy to make yourself.
A basic DIY panel is just a wooden frame (pine or similar) stuffed with 50–100mm thick rockwool batts and wrapped in breathable fabric. You can build four decent-sized panels (roughly 1200mm × 600mm) for around $100–150 AUD in materials.
Where to place them:
- First reflection points — Sit in your mixing position. Have someone slide a mirror along the side walls. Wherever you can see your speaker in the mirror, that’s a first reflection point. Put a panel there.
- Behind your monitors — If your desk is close to a wall, a panel behind each speaker reduces the bass build-up from boundary effects.
- Above your mix position — A ceiling-mounted panel (or one hung from hooks) catches reflections bouncing off the ceiling between your speakers and your ears.
Four panels covering first reflection points and the ceiling will make a bigger difference than any other single upgrade you can make to your studio. I’m not exaggerating — it’s that significant.
2. Bass Traps in the Corners
Low frequencies are the hardest to control and the most problematic in small rooms. Bass builds up in corners, creating uneven frequency response — some notes boom out of proportion while others practically disappear. This makes it nearly impossible to make accurate mixing decisions about your low end.
The fix: bass traps. These are thick absorptive panels (ideally 100mm or more) placed in the corners of your room where bass energy accumulates. Floor-to-ceiling corner traps are ideal, but even partial coverage helps.
You can build bass traps using the same rockwool material as your wall panels — just make them thicker (stack two layers of 50mm batts) and mount them diagonally across the corners. Four corner traps will smooth out your low end dramatically.
If you’re mixing in a room without bass traps and wondering why your low end never translates to other systems, this is almost certainly why. I often receive mixes from artists where the bass is either massively overcooked or practically absent — and when I ask about their room, there’s zero corner treatment.
3. Heavy Curtains and Soft Furnishings
Not everyone can (or wants to) build panels. Fair enough. You can still make meaningful improvements with what you’ve already got or can pick up cheaply:
- Thick curtains or moving blankets hung on walls behind you or to the sides will absorb mid and high frequency reflections. They won’t do much for bass, but they’ll reduce flutter echoes and boxiness.
- Bookshelves filled with books act as surprisingly effective diffusers. The irregular surfaces scatter sound rather than reflecting it cleanly.
- Rugs or carpet on hard floors reduce reflections between the floor and ceiling. A thick rug between your monitors and your listening position makes a noticeable difference.
- A couch or upholstered furniture in the room adds broadband absorption. Sounds odd, but it genuinely helps.
These won’t replace proper acoustic panels, but they’re a solid starting point if you’re working with a near-zero budget.
4. Portable Vocal Booths and Reflection Filters
If your main concern is recording clean vocals rather than mixing accuracy, a portable reflection filter (the half-circle shields that mount behind the mic) can help reduce room reflections reaching the back of the mic.
A word of caution though: these are not a substitute for room treatment. They only treat a small area directly around the microphone, and cheaper ones can actually introduce their own coloration. They’re a useful supplement, not a solution on their own.
For a more effective portable option, consider building a small vocal corner using moving blankets hung from a frame or a clothes rack. Surround three sides of the mic area with heavy blankets, and you’ll get significantly cleaner vocal recordings than a reflection filter alone.
What Doesn’t Work (Save Your Money)
Thin Foam Tiles
Those cheap egg-crate or pyramid foam tiles you see plastered across bedroom studios on YouTube? They’re almost useless for anything meaningful.
Thin foam (25mm or less) only absorbs very high frequencies. It does nothing for the low-mids and bass that cause most of the problems in small rooms. What you end up with is a room that’s lost its natural high-frequency “air” but still has all the boxy, muddy resonances. You’ve actually made the problem worse by creating an unbalanced acoustic environment.
If you’ve already bought foam tiles, they’re not doing harm on first reflection points — they’re just not doing enough. Consider replacing them with thicker panels as budget allows, or layer them over thicker absorptive material.
Egg Cartons
I shouldn’t have to say this in 2026, but I still see it: egg cartons are not acoustic treatment. They do effectively nothing for sound absorption. They’re a fire hazard. Please don’t.
Mattresses Against the Wall
A mattress will absorb some mid and high frequencies, but it’s inconsistent, takes up enormous space, looks terrible, and can develop mould in humid environments (looking at you, Queensland). There are better options at every price point.
A Realistic Budget Breakdown
Here’s what a practical acoustic treatment setup looks like at different price points, using Australian dollar estimates:

You’d be amazed at how much the $100–200 tier alone transforms a room. Most home studios I see that produce great recordings fall into that range — it’s not about spending more, it’s about spending smart.
Placement Matters More Than Quantity
A common mistake is buying a pack of 20 small foam panels and sticking them evenly across every wall. That’s not how acoustics work. Four well-placed panels will outperform twenty randomly scattered ones every time.
The priority order for panel placement:
- First reflection points (left and right walls) — Use the mirror trick described above
- Ceiling reflection point — Directly above your listening position, between your speakers and your head
- Corners — Bass traps in as many corners as possible, prioritising the front corners (behind your monitors)
- Behind monitors — Especially if your desk is close to the front wall
- Rear wall — Either absorption or diffusion, depending on the room
Start with positions 1–3 and you’ll cover the vast majority of acoustic issues in a typical bedroom studio.
How This Connects to Your Mix
Every improvement you make to your room feeds directly into the quality of what you send to a mix engineer — or what you hear when mixing yourself. Cleaner recordings mean the engineer spends less time fixing room issues and more time making creative decisions that serve the song.
